The School of Music offers the Master of Music (MMus) and the MA in Music. There are two streams: one in performance, the other being musical research.

Performance studies are offered in piano, voice, orchestral instruments, and guitar.

The School of Music participates in collaborative programs in Women’s Studies and in Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the master's level (MA only). For more information on these programs, see “Admission Requirements.”

The collaborative master’s in Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MDV) has two goals:

* To offer at the graduate level a multi-disciplinary education in Medieval and Renaissance Studies;
* To teach students the theoretical approaches and methods of research specific to the study of the period.

The specialization in Medieval and Renaissance Studies is intended for students who wish to enrich their training by including to their main program an interdisciplinary component in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Besides a thesis or a major research paper on a topic related to the medieval and Renaissance period, the specific requirements of the collaborative program include two core courses in medieval studies (MDV), one of which will count as a partial requirement in the main discipline.

The School also offers two graduate diplomas, one in piano pedagogy research and another in orchestral studies.

The summer term (May to August) of the first year of study for this program is considered a regularly scheduled break approved by the University. Students must resume full-time studies in September.

The programs operates within the general framework of the academic regulations in effect for graduate studies.

Candidates are required to have one of the following:

* A BMus.
* A four-year honours BA in music.
* A four-year BA with a major in music.
* Or an equivalent degree or diploma.

A 75 percent (B+) average is required for the undergraduate degree or diploma. If the degree is from a conservatory, it is deemed equivalent if so indicated on the transcript, or if the total course work is equivalent, to a four-year BA, and includes the equivalent of 6 units in music history and 6 units in music theory. In addition, applicants must perform an audition or submit an example of writing from undergraduate work in music history or music theory. The choice of evaluation depends on whether the student wishes to pursue the performance stream or the musicology/theory stream. Applicants may be asked to take placement tests in music history, music theory or aural skills. If remedial work is necessary, deficiencies must be remedied by the end of the first year.

Candidates are admitted either to the MMus or the MA. A student who has successfully completed the requirements of the MMus degree may, instead of accepting the MMus, become a candidate for the MA with the approval of the Graduate Studies Committee.

Collaborative Program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies

Entry into the collaborative program requires at least a passive knowledge of French language.

Applications to the collaborative program must be submitted at the same time as the application for admission to the master's program in the main discipline.

Students wishing to enroll in the Collaborative program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies must first be admitted to the Master's program in one of the participating units. Candidates must hold an Honours Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Requirements for this program have been modified. Please consult the 2018-2019 calendars for the previous requirements.

Master's with Thesis

Students must complete the requirements of their primary program and those of the collaborative program. The course MDV 5100 (3 units) in Medieval and Renaissance Studies will be counted towards the requirements of the primary program. Consequently, students in the specialization will have only one extra course to take.

Students are allowed to take a 3-unit course in music (MUS) at the 4000 level among MUS 4158, MUS 4159, MUS 4301, MUS 4302, MUS 4308, MUS 4310, MUS 4558, MUS 4559, MUS 4701, MUS 4702, MUS 4708, MUS 4710.

Students in the Piano Pedagogy Research stream may, subject to the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies in Music, include up to 6 units of graduate courses in education (EDU). All of M.A. students may choose up to 3 units in another graduate program with the approval of the Director of Graduate Studies.

Students must complete the two compulsory courses before they register to the thesis. Note that MDV 5900 is a bilingual course that requires at least a passive knowledge of French.

The thesis must be on a topic related to Medieval and Renaissance Studies; the proposed topic must be approved by the program committee of the participating unit and the committee of the collaborative program. The supervision of the thesis must be carried out by a professor approved by the collaborative program committee. At least one of the two thesis examiners must be a member of the collaborative program. The title of the degree will indicate the discipline of the participating unit with the specification "specialization in Medieval and Renaissance Studies."

The thesis evaluation consists of two steps: the written evaluation and the final submission of the thesis. An oral defence is not included in the process and is neither required nor allowed in this program.

Duration of the Program

Full-time students are expected to fulfill all requirements within two years. The maximum time permitted is four years from the date of initial enrollment in the program.

Minimum Standards

The passing grade in all courses is C+. Students who fail two courses (equivalent to 6 units) must withdraw from the program.

MUS 8101 Doctoral Seminar in Music Studies Part 1 (1.5 units)

This seminar will cover the main literature and the principal approaches for conducting interdisciplinary research in music. Part 1 and 2 do not have to be taken sequentially. Part 1 will focus on theories of interdisciplinarity and interdisciplinary research in music as well as techniques of research and bibliography. As part of this seminar, students will be required to present and discuss their ongoing research with fellow students and professors.

La note donnée sera S (satisfaisant) ou NS (non satisfaisant). / Two domains: one question on a topic specific to music and one question in the secondary discipline. The Oral Comprehensive Exam can only proceed once the Written Comprehensive Exam has been completed. The course will be graded S (satisfactory) / NS (Not satisfactory).
